Donald E. Alhart 80 of Sandwich died at his home Friday July 9, 2021.
He was the husband of Linda C. (Cook) Alhart, who he met on a blind date during a classic Rochester snow storm. They had been married for 55 years.
Born in St. Louis, MO, Don was the son of the late William and Virginia (Strathman) Alhart. He spent his youth and young adulthood in Rochester, NY. He was a graduate of the University of Rochester and always remained friends with his Psi Upsilon brothers and served as their President. He received his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Cornell University and his JD from Cornell Law School. He was a lifelong student and a teacher of the Constitution.
After working at a Rochester law firm, Don moved to Weston, MA with his family to work at Fidelity Investments, where he had a remarkable and satisfying career.
His interests were varied. He played college basketball, which remained an ongoing passion for him. He was an avid reader, especially books of history, and he collected rare and first edition books. He enjoyed fishing, building HO model trains, grilling, watching westerns and playing golf with friends. He was famous for his breakfasts consisting of pounds of bacon and eggs and his mile high sundaes. He travelled widely, with Linda. He also served on many community boards, gladly giving of his time and talents.
In addition to his wife, Don is survived by a son, Peter Alhart of Waltham; a daughter, Julie Danforth and her husband, Stuart of Wayland. “Grampy” was proud of his seven grandchildren, Connor, Will and James Danforth, and Colton, Caiden, Alexis and Skylar Alhart. To them he was coach, teacher, support and Santa. In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his twin brother, Rev. Daryl Alhart.
Don’s family will gather at a later date to celebrate his life.
