Donna L. (Bryant) Smith 67 of South Yarmouth passed away Friday June 18, 2021.

She was the wife of Michael C. Smith. They were married for 43 years.

Born in Worcester, Donna attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she was a Phi Beta Kappa member. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Philosophy. She then received a Master’s Degree in Ancient Greek from Boston College. With her keen understanding of language, she began her career working as a programmer at Liberty Mutual, where she mastered many computer languages, including COBOL, C++, and Visual Basic.

When her children were young she started a successful Medical Billing Business that she ran out of her home for 10 years. When the children were older she worked again on computers for John Hancock Insurance in Boston. She won several prestigious awards for her work at John Hancock.

After her official retirement, Donna moved to her beloved Cape Cod and vowed only to go over the bridge if absolutely necessary. Unable to slow down, she worked in the office of Dr. Gary Tratt, where she enjoyed his kindness and the comradery with all the women who worked there.

Donna was an incredible mom. Raising her children in Topsfield, she juggled working full time, but never missed a sporting event and volunteered for all of her kids’ school events. She coached both of her children in their Odyssey of the Mind Adventure taking teams to the regional finals.

Her home was a popular spot for after school meetings, because she never failed to have snacks, many of them homemade baked goods, ready for groups of kids at a moment’s notice. Donna always encouraged her kids to follow their interests and supported them in everything they did.

Donna belonged to St. David’s Episcopal Church in South Yarmouth and always contributed food and dry goods to their pantry. She volunteered at several Church fundraisers and frequently did readings at services.

In addition to her loving husband, Donna leaves her devoted children, Alana and her husband, Taylor of Washington D. C., and Patrick and his wife, Jennifer of South Yarmouth; her mother, Helen Melchione of Worcester; a brother, Ronald Bryant of South Carolina; three sisters, Patricia Creedon of New Hampshire, Susan Cory of Worcester, and Cindy Baril of Barnstable; three grand-children, William, Ania, and Jameson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

I want to express my deepest sympathy for Mike and all of Donna's family. Donna was my roommate at UMass during our junior year and again when we went to Boston for graduate school. She was a kind and generous person whose smile could light up a room. I am so sorry to hear of her passing.
