Kathryn (Niles) Schober

Apr 14th, 2021

Kathryn (Niles) Schober, known as Kitty or Kit to family and close friends, passed away on April 14, 2021 at the Windsor Nursing Home and Rehab Center in South Yarmouth, MA.

Kitty was born in Seattle Washington, the daughter of the late Gordon Truman and Martha (Harmes) Niles. She was predeceased by her older sister, Phyllis.

Kitty spent her childhood years in Yokohama, Japan, as the family relocated as part of the Occupation Forces from the USA following WWII. She enjoyed Ikebana – the Japanese method of arranging flowers. The family relocated to Casper, WY to be near Gordon’s relatives until he was reassigned to the arsenal in Joliet, IL in Transportation Management, just as he had been in Japan as a civilian working for the US Military.

Kitty went to high school in Joliet and then attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where she majored in English and earned a Masters of Art Degree in Teaching in 1965. Her sorority sisters were loyal and lifelong friends. They had reunions every couple of years all around the country.

Kitty taught English in middle and high schools in Danbury, CT, Bound Brook, NJ and Bridgewater, NJ. She also taught creative writing and enjoyed talking to students about Shakespeare, John Milton and James Joyce.

Kathryn is survived by her husband of 53 years, Donald Lincoln Schober, of South Yarmouth and formerly of Milwaukee, WI. They were married at the Presbyterian Church in Evanston, IL on April 6, 1968, and lived in a rented apartment while Don was completing his studies and research on his doctorate in Physical Organic Chemistry at the University of Chicago. They lived in Danbury, CT for most of their marriage. They retired to Cape Cod in 2001 and resided in Brewster, MA until they moved to South Yarmouth in 2018. They were members of the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Danbury, CT and in Brewster, MA.

Together Don and Kitty traveled to the Galapagos Islands where they were awed by the geology and learning about the brilliance of Darwin in his theory of evolution. They cruised to Alaska twice, and enjoyed many trips to Hilton Head, SC, Carlsbad, CA, Little Dix Bay, Virgin Gorda, BVI. Kitty accompanied Don on business trips to Vienna, Austria, Tokyo, Japan, and Moscow, Russia. They also enjoyed playing Bridge. During her retirement, Kitty worked with Carla Burke at the Brooks Free Library in Harwich, MA to tutor vision impaired individuals to navigate computer programs with key strokes, rather than with computer screens.

Funeral services are private.

Donations in Kitty’s name can be made to Joslin Diabetes Center 1 Joslin Pl, Boston, MA 02215 or to Perkins School for the Blind 175 N. Beacon St, Watertown, MA 02472.
