Mary Chisholm Johnson, 87, of South Yarmouth, MA, passed away peacefully in her home on August 26, 2020, with her family by her side. She will be greatly missed. Born June 27, 1933, in Gloucester, MA, Mary was the youngest of three children of Evelyn Ruth Murphy and Leo Alwin Chisholm. She would often share many happy memories of her childhood in Gloucester, especially summers swimming in Winniahdin.

After graduating from Framingham State Teacher's College in 1955, she began her career as an elementary school teacher at the Carr School in Newton, MA. She went on to teach in the Montgomery and Baltimore County school systems in Maryland, the American Elementary School in Verdun, France, and the Harwich Elementary School on Cape Cod. After earning her Master of Education from Worcester State College at age 53, she taught for 12 years at Eastham Elementary School on the Cape. She loved her students, and the house was full of home-made school materials designed to teach reading, math, and social studies.

Mary loved music, having studied piano and guitar. One of her favorite memories was traveling to Brussels in 1953 with her college choir to participate in the International Music Festival. She was an active member of the St. Pius X Church for many years, where she taught CCD and played guitar and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed sports a great deal, particularly watching her children's games, where her choir-trained voice often surpassed the regular cheers for the home team. Though severe hearing loss plagued her later years, she would often return to the piano to sing and play "I Could Have Danced All Night." She also loved animals, gardening, and going to the beach to take a swim in the ocean.

Mary is pre-deceased by her husband Roy of 52 years, her brother Jim and his wife Libby, and her brother Bill. She is survived by her four children: daughter Carolyn Johnson and her partner Victor Petkauskos of Osterville, MA, son Bill Johnson and his wife Mary of Marstons Mills, MA, daughter Carin Nuernberg and her husband Cristiano of Cambridge, MA, and son Brian Johnson and his wife Kristen of Norwell, MA, in addition to her six grandchildren: Malia, Will, Lucas, Leo, Lorenzo, and Carter. She is survived by her sister-in-law Patricia Chisholm, and on her husband's side of the family, sister-in-law Martha Loiter and her husband Peter of Sandwich, MA, brother-in-law Richard Johnson and his wife Diane of West Barnstable, MA, and sister-in-law Marjorie Johnson of Tequesta, FL. She is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews and several dear friends who provided her with such love and support, particularly in her later years.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Pius X Church, Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, MA, on Monday, August 31, 2020 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a burial service at the Chandler Gray Cemetery, West Yarmouth, MA. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Hearing Loss Association of America at https://www.hearingloss.org/make-an-impact/donate/ or the MSPCA at https://www.mspca.org/donate-now/.

A blessing but sad. Mary was great neighbor and friend to our Mom Nancy Danielson, Mary and the Johnson family were a welcoming and caring family from the very beginning in 1978. So many fond memories of kids playing, Carl & Brian fishing at Lily Pond during summer vacations on the Cape. In recent years Mary & Nancy saw each other almost everyday for an afternoon of TV,maybe sharing a Klondike Bar and of course patting Robbie(Nancy's dog) who absolutely loved Mary. It was a wonderful time for all 3 of them. Friday night Pizza Parties with Bill and the Kids. Luncheons with Sally T and the ladies. All wonderfully remembered as a time of good neighbors and friends caring for each other. It was Nancy's lucky day when they bought a home next door to the Johnson's, such a blessing. We are so thankful but sad that this time is over but so fondly remembered as the good old days, For those of you reading this Nancy has moved to Thirwood Place and is happy there but often speaks of Mary. One last blessing for Mary was that her wonderful, loving children brought her home to pass in the peace of her home ' their home together. Our love and prayers for all of you at this time of grieving but also for joyful memories of a life well lived.
