Howard Alfred Harris III "Fred"
Jul 12th, 2019
Howard Alfred Harris III “Fred” 81 of Orleans died Friday July 12, 2019 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Born in Hartford, CT and raised and educated in West Hartford, CT, Fred was the loving son of the late Howard A. Harris, Jr. and Sarah “Sally” (Barker) Harris. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 and served most of that time in Germany. Fred retired from the State of Connecticut and worked at the State office building in Hartford for thirteen years.
After his retirement, Fred moved with his parents in 1975 to Eastham and then to Orleans in 1990. He was an avid weekly whale watcher for seventeen years on the Dolphin Fleet in Provincetown. He could be seen three nights a week having dinner at the Yardarm Restaurant in Orleans with his mother at their special reserved corner table. He enjoyed his nephews and nieces when they visited and especially at family outings.
In spite of many health issues, Fred persevered through it all with the loving help of his parents, family and various agencies. Many thanks to Dr. Kim Mead-Walters, Dr. Christine Amis, Dr. Benjamin Chung and Dr. Jonathan Miller for always being there giving him the best of care. The family is most grateful to the Acquired Brain Injury Wavier program for keeping him home and in the community with their unwavering support.
Fred is survived by his sister, Judith Jalbert and her husband, Arthur of Orleans; six nephews, Steven, David, Christian, Kenneth, Keith, and Austin Jalbert; seven grandnephews; five grandnieces; and one great grandnephew.
Funeral services will be private.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Jeremy Walters Scholarship Fund, c/o Cape Cod Five, P.O. Box 10, Orleans, MA 02653.
