Barbara Joan Moore (Lefferts)

Jul 3rd, 2019

MOORE - Barbara Joan (Lefferts) 76 of Yarmouth Port passed away peacefully on Wednesday July 3, 2019 surrounded by the love and support of her family and friends. She was an amazing, strong, feisty and funny woman who left us with a wealth of great memories.

Born in Bristol, PA, Barbara was the daughter of the late Francis and Mildred (Fabian) Lefferts. An only child, she was at the top of her class at St. Mary’s High School and went on to graduate from the University of Delaware with a teaching degree. This was the beginning of her passion for education and her love (and mastery) of the English language. She was a high school teacher of English and Spanish and a life-long avid reader. She expanded her love for reading later in life by owning and operating ‘The Book Rack’, a bookstore in her beloved hometown of Yarmouth. It was here that she continued to share her thirst for knowledge and passion for books with others. She worked with duty and dedication up until a few weeks before her final days. She forged countless friendships throughout her years at The Book Rack, and her knowledge and wit will be sorely missed.

Barbara’s greatest loves were her family. She was the mother to two loving sons and their wives: Eric Moore and his wife, Nancy, and the late Jeffrey Moore, and her daughter in-law, Sharon. She was infinitely proud of her three cherished grandchildren; Alison, Ryan, and Patrick Moore. Affectionately known as ‘Gammy’, she was passionate about introducing them to new experiences and fostering a quest for knowledge, education and reading from a very young age. Her personality and knack for key phrases and expressions will be passed between generations to come.

She appreciated the beauty and culture of the Cape Cod lifestyle and was proud to call it home for over 25 years. It was here where Barbara met her beloved Paul Lowell and spent some of the happiest years of her life. She valued the simple things in life and forged many close, long-time friendships over the years.

A celebration of her life, where all are welcome to share stories and to celebrate and honor Barbara, will be held at 2:15 p.m. Saturday July 20 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.  Visiting hours, with family and friends, will be held from 1 to 2 pm in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Foundation Fighting Blindness, 7168 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 100, Columbia, MD 21046. www.fightingblindness.org.  This is an organization focused on the research, prevention and treatment for people with degenerative eye diseases.

Barbara lived down the hall from me during my last 2 years at U of D. We became very close during that time and our friendship continued. Too many good times to list---many wonderful memories! No one could make me laugh like Barbara. I will miss her.

Barbara was a pistol....She made everyone feel like she knew you for your whole life. I considered her a good friend. We talked about our children & grandchildren and we laughed about our shortcomings. I enjoyed sending her cards as she always said keep them coming, Pam. She will be missed by many but I feel honored to have been a friend of hers.

I shared a room with Barbara for two years at the University of Delaware and Oh! the stories I could tell. We had a good time together working hard and taking time out to go to basketball games, get snacks at the Scrounge. Barbara taught us how to play bridge. We hurried back from dinner every night so we would have time to play bridge before "Quiet Hours" started. Those years learning bridge have served me well for many years. Lots of love.
