Robert Wayne Gray

Robert W. Gray, 95 years young, passed away March 4, 2019 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Son of Laura and Smith Gray, born in Newcomerstown, Ohio, where he assisted his family on their farm. At 18, he joined US Navy during World War II, where he was stationed in Australia on a team pivotal in working to crack Japanese code. After the war, Robert attended Case Western Reserve. Upon graduation he began his life long career with IBM in Ohio, moving to Chappaqua, New York with his young family in 1960. He and Ruth designed and built a home in VA for their retirement. Twenty years ago they moved to Cape Cod.
Robert, also known as Bob, enjoyed numerous activities. He was a Mason. He earned his pilot’s license and loved flying small aircrafts to New England destinations. He played golf regularly, skied, swam, fished, gardened, and eagerly awaited the arrival of the hummingbirds, Tux and Greenback at his feeder. Musically talented, he enjoyed singing and participated in a barbershop quartet. Bob was a sports enthusiast and followed the Sox and Pats closely. He enjoyed woodworking and made lovely gifts for his family and friends. Bob was an ingenious problem solver, creator and could repair almost anything. He also enjoyed solving the daily crossword and Sudoku puzzle.
Robert was a devoted, loving husband and father. He is survived by his three daughters, Dianne O’Connell, Joyce Maguire, Karen Gray-Plaisted and husband Todd Plaisted. His grandchildren, Christopher (Kit) Robert O’Connell, Sean Robert Gray Maguire, Riley Alan Gray Plaisted and Haley Marie Gray Plaisted admired and adored him. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Ruth Marie Wolbold, and two grandsons, John James Gray Maguire and Peter Gray O’Connell.
Friends are invited to celebrate Robert’s life with his family on Saturday March 9, 2019 at 11:00am in Hallett Funeral Home 273 Station Ave, South YArmouth. Graveside service will follow in Chandler Gray Cemetery off Higgins Crowell Rd, West Yarmouth.
