Jean Arnts Wixon Fleming
Aug 11th, 2015
Jean Arnts Wixon Fleming died after a short illness on Sunday, Augustl 9, 2015 at the age of 91. Jean was born on October 16, 1923. She loved to tell stories of growing up happily with her one brother and eight sisters in the small slate mining town of Bangor, PA. Her parents, Clara and Verne Arnts, an insurance salesman, raised a loving, close-knit family.
During WWII Jean decided to join the U.S. Marines, where she spent 2 years in Arlington, VA, earning the rank of Corporal. She was proud of her initiative to leave her tiny home town and do something special out of high school. While vacationing on Cape Cod with a girlfriend from the Marines, she met and then married Stuart A. Wixon, a native Cape Codder from Dennis Port, where she has lived for almost 70 years. "Wick" died in 1973. Her second husband, Thomas J. Fleming, died in 1997. Jean enjoyed the company of her friend, Stewart P. Doane, a high school buddy of Wick's, for many years until he passed away in October 2014.
Jean is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Fritz Jones, many nieces and nephews, her son Scott Wixon and daughter-in-law, Karen Bernard-Wixon, from New York City, her daughter Janice Wixon, from Dennis Port, and daughter Kathy Wixon and son-in-law, Dr. Abe Genack, from Ashland, OR, two grandsons, Nathaniel Wixon and Jacob Wixon-Genack and three granddaughters, Jenna Wixon-Genack, Alexandra Wixon and Cydney Wixon. She has many "daughters" who think of her as their mother. Everyone loved Jean and will miss her kind presence very much.
She was a long-time member of P.E.O International and the South Yarmouth Methodist Church. In her later years, when traveling was too hard for her, she loved being in her own home and found great pleasure in music, reading, and watching game shows, anything on PBS, movies, golf, and travel shows, and enjoying visits and phone calls from family and friends.
A memorial service and light lunch will be held at the South Yarmouth Methodist Church, on Old Main St., on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dennis Public Library, 5 Hall Street, Dennisport, MA 02639.
