Mary (Thomas) Aseltine, passed away into eternal life surrounded by her  loving family on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the McCarthy Care Center in  Sandwich.  She was the beloved wife of the late F. William Aseltine for 48 years.

She was born in Boston, MA to Wallace Bruce Thomas and Evah Elizabeth (Brimmer) Thomas and raised in Belmont.  Mary later attended Pembroke College, now part of Brown University.  After marrying Bill, they lived in Winchester, Concord and Weston until retiring to the Cape in 1972, which she loved. She resided mainly in East Dennis.

Mary was a generous soul always giving of herself.  In her younger years she played the flute in the band and orchestra.  She was both a campfire girl and a girl scout leader. She taught church school in Weston as well as at the Dennis Union Church, where she was a member for 45 years.  She was active in the Womens Fellowship as well as a member of the East Dennis Ladies Aid Society.  She also served as President of the Cape Cod Parkinson’s Support Group, where Bill was a member.

Her favorite times were the times she spent with her family.  She used to joke that it was hard to keep up with the grandchildren.  She enjoyed traveling with the family and the quiet times of ice cream together or watching them at various activities.  She was an avid reader and a member of numerous book clubs throughout the years.  For her last two years, her faithful cat, Shadow, was on her lap.  They were inseparable.  Shadow passed away unexpectedly twelve hours prior to Mary’s passing.  We believe they are still together.

She was predeceased by her sister, Gertrude Leyendecker of New York City and an infant daughter, Evah Grace Aseltine.  She is survived by her two daughters, Cheryl Murphy (Michael) and Melissa O’Rourke (John).  She was a loving grandmother to Tim, Shawn, Erik, Jason, Tom, Jessica, Micaela, Brianna and Patrick and a loving great grandma to Karissa, Karina, Finnegan and Emmie. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Jeffrey Martens and staff of Bickford Health Associates, Mary’s nurse’s aids and everyone at Hope Health. Thank you all!

A memorial service will be held at the Dennis Union Church, Route 6A, Dennis, MA on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 11:00 A.M.  Burial to follow in Quivet Cemetery, East Dennis, MA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dennis Union Church, Hope Health of to the charity of one’s choice.

I was a member of the Ladies Aid Siociety for a short time but I found the most enjoyable lecture I saw there was Mary’s history. What a wonderful woman and son willing to share her knowledge of the past. I moved back to California when my mother , Dorothy Maloney , decided to move from East Dennis in 2010. Only just finding this in the web. Never too late to say how impressed one Ione was with an acquaintance!
