YARMOUTH PORT - Raja Tamm-Day passed away at home on August 11, 2017 at the age of 74 after a brave and arduous battle with cancer. Raja (pronounced “Ri-yah”) immigrated to America from Tallinn, Estonia in 1979 with her first husband, Juri Tamm and their children Anne and Ivo, soon settling in Southbridge, MA. Sadly, Juri passed away in 1988. Raja then worked many hours at part-time jobs and selling her wonderful baking creations to local restaurants in order to support her family. Learning English was another challenge that she met with determination and success. Eventually Raja found full-time employment at the Webster First Federal Credit Union in Webster, MA., and was always grateful for their acceptance of her, for opportunities given, and in general to be part of the W.F.F.C.U. working family until retirement from her accounting position after many years. In 1998 Raja married Steven Day and resided first in Charlton, MA, then moving back to Southbridge for 16 years in a house where she loved hosting large family holiday dinners at a meticulously set table, and nurturing a colorful flower garden every summer. In September of 2015 Steve and Raja moved to the Heatherwood Condominiums in Yarmouth Port, MA where she was quick to endear herself to many new friends and to continue her love of sharing with them her fresh-baked loaves of “Sweet Bread” and other great baking and cooking samples. Raja is survived by her loving and grateful husband of 19 years, Steven Day, daughter Anne Tamm of Marietta, GA, son Ivo Tamm and his wife Joyce of Smyrna, GA, stepsons Ben Day and wife Flavia of Brookline, MA and Matt Day of Portland, ME, grandchildren Stian, Nikolai, Fredrik, and Sophie in Marietta, GA, and Cal and Finn in Portland ME. She also leaves her mother-in-law Sally Day of Worcester, MA, sisters Ira Koosel and husband Vello of Millbury, MA and Ina Zicene of Lithuania, brothers-in-law Stuart (Alison), Spencer (Lois), Kenneth (Diana), sister-in-law Betsey (Jim), a niece Angela and nephews Marco and Eric. Raja requested that her remains be donated to a medical school and that there be no calling hours, flowers or funeral. The surviving family will decide on a way of celebrating Raja’s life on a future date. She and her family extend their sincere gratitude to the in-home hospice care team at the VNA of Cape Cod, and especially for the attentiveness, guidance and compassion shown by Anne Marie, Cindy, and Sarah.
