Harold A. Wiper, Jr.

WIPER – Harold A. Jr., 87 of East Dennis died Tuesday May 9, 2017 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
He was the husband of Olive B. (Thacher) Wiper.
Born in New York, NY, Mr. Wiper was the son of the late Harold A. and Miriam (Cherry) Wiper. He was raised and educated in Boston and Newton and was a graduate of Newton High School. He attended Deerfield Academy, received his bachelors degree from Dartmouth College, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and the Dragon Senior Honor Society, and his master’s degree from Boston University.
Mr. Wiper served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged with the rank of 1st Lieutenant in 1954.
As a science teacher, Mr. Wiper taught at Suffield Academy, Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School, and for thirty years at Newton North High School, retiring in 1991. He also taught summers at Loretto Heights College in Denver Colorado under a National Science Foundation Grant.
Mr. Wiper was a member and founder of several educational organizations in Massachusetts including, the Hall of Fame for Science Educators, the Greater Boston Biology Teachers Assoc., the Marine Educators Assoc., and the Coalition for the Advancement of Science Education.
Mr. Wiper was the recipient of many awards including, Honorary Member of the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) and served as their Regional Director, the Presidential Award for Massachusetts Association of Science Supervisors (MASS), Outstanding Biology Teacher for MASS, the MASS Science Educator of the Year and served as their Executive Secretary, the Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers (MAST) Teacher of the Year, and the Who’s Who in American Education, the Massachusetts Marine Educators Service Award and served as treasurer. He was also the regional director of Skylab for N.A.S.A and attended the Skylab launch.
Mr. Wiper also was co-chair of the NABT National Convention in Boston, a member of the MASS State Science Fair, served on the Steering Committee of the National Science Teachers Association, he edited newsletters for the Greater Boston Biology Teachers, the MAST and MASS, attended and participated in many science meetings and conventions, and he published several articles for science magazines.
A resident of Suffield, Ct and Sudbury, Mr. Wiper moved to East Dennis in 1992. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, The Shriners Club, and the Dennis Union Church, serving as a deacon, property committee member and the served on the auction team. He was also a member and President of the Nau-Sets Square Dancing Club, the Cape Cod Men’s Club, a life member of the Cape Cod Jazz Society, and the Dennis Golf Clubs.
Mr. Wiper enjoyed traveling, including to all 50 states, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. He also enjoyed camping, kayaking, skiing, and swimming.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Wiper is survived by three daughters, Diane J. Stearns of Sudbury, Susan E. Fleming of Hyannis, and Nancy J. Klein and her husband, John of Centennial, CO; five grandchildren, Jasun, Cory, Ross, Emily, and Lindsey; two great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and the Thacher family. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wiper was predeceased by a brother, James C. Wiper. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday May 15 in the Dennis Union Church, 713 Route 6A, Dennis.
Interment will be private.
