David Reid, 88, died on April 1 at the McCarthy Care Center after a long battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Susan for over 60 years. Born December 11, 1928, in Beverly, Mass. David came from humble beginnings. After his father closed the family candy business in 1937, David moved with his mother and two brothers to Cape Cod while his father looked for work in Boston. Those years on the Cape were the happiest times of his childhood. While caddying at the Bass River golf course to earn money to help his family, he wandered over to the river and met Lawrence “Jolly” Rogers. Jolly taught him to fish and thus began his life-long passion for fishing. During The Occupation, he served in the 11th Airborne in Northern Japan. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts on the GI Bill, earning a degree in accounting. The next 35 years were spent in Chicago in the insurance business. He was very well respected by his clients for his honest approach to business and through his council, many were helped to become successful in their careers. Through Susan, he was introduced to the Episcopal Church and became a devout Christian. He credited the church’s core teachings to guide him in his business practices and give him strength when things were rough. David and Susan adopted twins in 1963. David and Susan retired to the Cape in 1983. They built a house on Bass River within eyesight of David’s childhood home. He declared himself “World Famous Cape Cod Dave” and in a few years, became known as an expert on flats fishing for striped bass. He was often seen wading the incoming tide at locations all over the Cape. In addition to fly fishing, David was an outdoorsman, an avid reader, and loved training his dogs over the years. In 2015, David and Susan moved to Heatherwood in Yarmouth Port where he has spent the last two years attending classes at Cape Cod Community College, enjoying the Heatherwood community, and sharing life stories with others. He dearly loved St. David’s Church and the community he found there. He is survived by his wife, Susan, his daughter, Pamela Graham, of New London, CT, his son, Peter, of Austin, TX, grandchildren, Thomas and Alexander Graham, his brother, Gordon, and sisters-in-law, Bernadette and Susan. He was predeceased by his brother, Abbott. A memorial service will be held at St. David’s Episcopal Church, S. Yarmouth, on Saturday, April 8 at 11 a.m. Donations in David’s memory may be made to St. David’s at 321 Main St., S. Yarmouth, MA 02664.

I met Dave when I started working at St. David's. He always made a point to stop and ask how I was doing and how things were going. Always offering any help he could to make my job better. I am so sorry I am not able to attend his service. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Pam, Peter, Mrs. Reid, Tom and Alex, I am sorry for your loss. Pam - Your dad was a very warm and loving father and friend. I know in his eyes you were always his "Pammy". He loved being a husband, dad and grandfather. I will miss hearing his words of wisdom and his love for his family. He made Cape Cod a better place by sharing his tales regarding the good old days on Bass River. I will always appreciate your dad taking time out of his Father's Weekend to come watch me play softball and share his wisdom and humor with me. I got to know Dave at St. David's. He went out of his way to befriend my daughter and me. We were both touched by his warmth, his love of God and his cheerfulness. I am so sorry for your loss. Dave will be missed a great deal by everyone who knew him.

I grew to love David over the years. He was a wonderful man. And he loved everyone in return. He will be missed.
