Sybil P. (Bindloss) Sim 98 of South Yarmouth and formerly of Mystic, CT died Saturday December 31, 2016, on her 98th birthday.

She was the wife of the late Harold L. Sim, Jr., who died on December 11, 2016 after 58 years of marriage.

Born and raised in Mystic, CT, where she was an avid sailor, Sybil was the daughter of the late Frank M. and Helen (Brown) Bindloss. She was educated at Connecticut College, graduating with honors and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She then attended Radclife College and received her Master’s Degree in French Studies.

Her working career in research was with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company of Boston. One of the high points was to lead a team to tour five European capitals for two months and learn the pros and cons of their health care system. Upon her return, Sybil wrote a report for publication in the New England Medical Journal. As an electronic research associate, she applied her knowledge of the company’s operations to the problem of selecting computers to handle the company’s data processing requirements. Sybil was also the first woman to be elected president of the Boston Chapter of the American Statistical Association in its 125 years of existence.

Sybil was ahead of her day in challenging her employer for equal pay. When that was declined, she took a job with a competing company, Honeywell Informations Systems.

Following a move to Pennington, NJ, Sybil worked for Northeast Career Center in Princeton, NJ as Registrar and Assistant to the Director. She also volunteered with the Princeton, NJ YWCA, in the programming department. While there she served as President for two years, and in her fifties, she took advantage of their Tap Dancing School, where she was a proud member of the Princeton Y Tappers.

Aside from her love of reading, she, and Harry, traveled extensively, including month long trips to Europe and the Caribbean. Their special spot was Prince Edward Island, where they built a house, enjoying both the farm and the ocean views from their home.

Sybil actively served as a Big Sister to a number of youths in the Trenton, NJ area. She also supported the Nature Conservancy and many animal rights groups.

In their retirement, they moved to Cape Cod, eventually to Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth. Sybil helped to edit the “Communicator” and volunteered in the library. She was a member of the Dennis Union Church for many years and enjoyed their Women’s Fellowship group. She had been a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) for many years, where she fostered long lasting relationships.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday April 8 at Thirwood Place, 237 North Main St., South Yarmouth, MA.

A reception will follow.
