Robert A. (Bob) McCarthy, 90, of South Yarmouth passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital on Friday, January 20, 2017. He was the loving husband of Winifred T. (Ryan) McCarthy for nearly 66 years. Together, Bob and Winnie have been known as great hosts for family and friends. This past summer, more than 100 people attended Bob’s 90th birthday party at their home, reuniting many of Bob’s nephews and nieces from across the country. In addition to his wife Winnie, Bob is survived by four children: Bob McCarthy and his wife Sheryl King of Milford, MA; Susan Fulton and her husband Bob of Bow, NH; John McCarthy and his fiancé Jane of Wilmington, NC; and Maryclaire McCarthy of Attleboro, MA. He also leaves 10 grandchildren: Elaine Fulton, Bobby Fulton, Michael Fulton, Jim Mackey, Steven Mackey and his wife Andrea, Julie Mauro and her husband Matt, Neia McCarthy, Patricia McCarthy, Denny McCarthy and Andrew McCarthy; and three great grandchildren: Jemma Mackey, Gabby Nosek and Everett Mauro. Bob was also pre-deceased by his infant granddaughter, Elizabeth McCarthy. Born in Medford, MA, Bob served in the US Army during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he drove a cab while attending night classes at Northeastern University where he eventually earned his engineering degree. During his career, he held various engineering design and drafting jobs at companies like Crosby, Manning Maxwell & Moore, The Foxboro Company, Hasbro Toy Company and Waters Corporation. In his free time, he took on every home improvement project without hesitation – then when finished, would always enjoy a cold beer on his back porch. He also loved to tinker. In the early 1970s, he built his own solar energy panel and installed it on the back of his house. And it worked. To make ends meet between jobs – especially during economic slowdowns – Bob ran his own wallpapering and painting business. After their marriage in 1951, Bob and Winnie lived primarily in Norwood and Walpole and enjoyed a vacation home in DennisPort for 30 years. In 1998, they moved to South Yarmouth. For most of his adult life, Bob found great joy (and profit) in playing blackjack and poker. After his retirement, he was always on the lookout for a good poker game and was a regular visitor to Foxwoods. Visiting hours will be held at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue (Exit 8 off Rt. 6) South Yarmouth, MA on Tuesday, January 24, from 4-7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Church, 5 Barbara St., (off Station Avenue) South Yarmouth on Wednesday, January 25 at 11 am. Burial will be held at 1:45 pm at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue, Bourne.
