Harold "Harry" L. Sim, Jr.
Dec 11th, 2016
SIM – Harold “Harry” L., Jr. 85 of South Yarmouth died at his home Sunday December 11, 2016.
He was the husband of, and is survived by, Sybil P. (Bindloss) Sim.
Born in Watertown, Harry was the only son of the late Harold L. and Katherine Sim. He was a graduate of Watertown High School and received his business degree from Northeastern University while working full time.
Harry and Sybil met while they were working at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. He was working with statistics and tabulators, while she was hired to form a committee to research the use of computers in their business. Together, with this committee, they spent five months in Europe doing research.
As a young boy, Harry had a passionate love for collecting toy soldiers, mostly of the British type. His collection is in mint condition, including original boxes, and are certainly of museum quality.
Harry moved to Pennington, NJ and worked for the state of New Jersey for over 30 years, continuing to work in the computer field. While in Pennington, he was also a member of the Volunteer Fire Company. Following his retirement, he moved to South Yarmouth.
An avid traveler, Harry, and Sybil, broadened their horizons and spent a month during a summer traveling to Norway on the mail boats and enjoying the countryside.
His love for collecting stamps flourished as they traveled, wanting to be sure he had some from the many places they visited. As his love for stamps increased, so did the number of societies to which he belonged, providing lots of enjoyment.
While in Europe, they rented a car and traveled across the Swiss Alps, on to Germany, Luxemburg and Bavaria. In France they visited the battlefields of Normandy, where his uncle is buried. On another trip, they flew to Nome, Alaska, above the Artic Circle, and went by boat to Anchorage and ending up in Washington.
Harry and Sybil built a vacation home on Prince Edward Island, which included many hours of clearing land, growing a vegetable garden, cutting and stacking wood for colder times, and enjoying the impressive views of farmland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Everyone enjoyed Harry’s sense of humor, always loving to have a good laugh and making one wonder, “what’s next!”.
