Ernest “Buddy” R. Shepherd

Ernest “Buddy” R. Shepherd, 91, of Dennis, died peacefully on Saturday, November 26, 2016. He was the husband of the late Vera Rose (Basden) Shepherd who died in 2007. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, to Ernest N. and Emily (Robson) Shepherd, Buddy was raised in Gillingham, Kent, England. At 16, Buddy enlisted in the British Army and served proudly in Egypt during World War II. After the War, he acquired his boxing license and fought as a professional boxer. He also worked as a lorry (truck) driver for many years. In 1955, along with his wife and two sons, Buddy emigrated to the United States, where they were residents of Somerville and Framingham. He was a long-time employee of Mystic Motors in Everett before retiring to Cape Cod in 1985. For 15 years, he and his wife were proprietors of Cape Haven Motel in Dennisport. Buddy was an avid carver of wooden birds which he proudly shared with everyone he knew. Buddy is survived by his sons, Gary and his wife Mary (Sullivan) of Holliston, and Terence and his wife Catherine (Foti) of Shrewsbury; three grandchildren, Joshua and his wife Kristen (Toomey), Caroline and Nora; and two great-grandchildren, Mia and Austin. He is also survived by his sister, Joan and her husband James, Burns of New Jersey and their family. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Norman, sister Doreen, and his granddaughter Sherry Anne. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Buddy’s caregivers at Eagle Pond and to all of his friends at the Club. A funeral service will be held Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 10:00 a.m., in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, followed by interment in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Route 134, South Dennis. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Why Me/Sherry’s House “Helping Children With Cancer,” 1152 Pleasant Street, Worcester, MA 01602.

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Shepherd's passing. I work at CVS in Dennis and it was always nice to see him when he came in. I hadn't seen him in quite a while and thought maybe he had moved away. There are some people that we always look for and when they stop coming into the store it is definitely noticed. Mr. Shepherd, rest in peace, you were one of my favorites!
