Mary I. Nelson

Aug 12th, 2016

Mary I. Nelson, 63, of West Yarmouth, died Friday, August 12, 2016, from complications of lupus. She was the wife of Glen A. Nelson for 44 years.
Born in Boston, Mary worked in banking before continuing her education at Bridgewater State University, where she received her Bachelor's in Early Education. She spent 30 years teaching in the Yarmouth elementary schools, including at Station Ave. Elementary since it opened in 1995.
Mary enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her granddaughter, Maddy, and her corgi, Rhiannon. At Halloween, she would hand out maps to her home and prepare hundreds of bags of toys and candy for entire schools of children. She wrote blank checks to book fairs because you can never own too many books. She never understood why one would have money when one could have a toy. She loved the Red Sox, even when they were terrible, and always held a grudge against Bill Buckner. Her favorite episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the musical episode, "Once More, with Feeling."
In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by her son Brian Nelson, his wife Cheryl Stewart and their daughter Madeleine, all of Yarmouth Port; daughter Sharon Nelson of West Yarmouth; and brother Joe Burley of Melbourne, Florida.
A Celebration of her Life is scheduled for September 17, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Station Ave. Elementary School in South Yarmouth.
Donations may be made in her memory to the Jimmy Fund, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 or via www.jimmyfund.org/gift.

My condolences to the Nelson family. I was never a student of Mrs. Nelson but I grew up in her neighborhood and fondly remember going out of our way to make it to her house on Halloween. She was ahead of her time in giving out toys instead of just candy. I have fond memories of receiving Hello Kitty mini stationary sets from her for Halloween. And as a fan of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" I deeply appreciate the mention of her favorite episode and wholeheartedly agree! P.S. I have the soundtrack on CD :) Rest in peace Mrs. Nelson, you were a sweet, lovely woman and an extraordinary teacher who deserved more time with your beloved family and friends.

I still can't believe that she died... She was my third grade teacher for years 2013 to 2014 and my favorite teacher in S.A.E. I miss her beyond belief... R.I.P Mary I. Nelson

Growing up, Brian and I were close friends, and I spent a lot of time in the Nelson house. Mrs. Nelson was a kind, generous, caring, supportive part of my childhood. I was so sorry to read of her passing. Brian, Sharron, and Mr Nelson- my condolences. She was a wonderful person and will be dearly missed.

Mary embodied an incredible combination of compassion, intellect, intensity and stunning creativity. She was a terrific friend, support and sister as well as being an absolute Hall of Famer as an aunt.
