Dorothy Joan Breckenridge died peacefully at home in Yarmouthport on April 12, 2016 with her husband at her side.
She was born in Boston, MA, the daughter of Edward James Kane and Florence Mary (Doyle) Kane. She grew up in the Boston area and graduated from Jamaica Plain High School. Later in life she earned her Licensed Professional Nursing degree, after which she practiced nursing, first in nursing homes and later in obstetrician offices, for over 20 years.
During her marriage to her husband of 37 years, Warren Breckenridge, she lived in Southboro, MA, Concord, MA, and, for the last nine years in Yarmouthport, MA. She also enjoyed a summer home in Brewster, MA.
Dorothy was absolutely devoted to her family and was adored by all. She was a tower of strength to everyone, generous with her love, comfort, counsel, and infinite patience. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, lavishing them with attention. She also enjoyed summers at the beach house in Brewster, sitting on the beach just enjoying the peace and quiet. Winter vacations were also a favorite, especially in Florida and on islands in the Caribbean.
Holidays were special to her. She took great pleasure in decorating the home at Christmas and hosting the family at Christmas and Thanksgiving. A special event on the fourth of July was a summer lobster fest with all the trimmings for the entire family on the deck of the Brewster house.
Dorothy is survived by her husband and by her brother, Edward James Kane and his wife, Isabelle. She was predeceased by her son, Raymond Thomas Sullivan, but is survived by her other children; Christopher Kane Sullivan and his wife, Blair, Gail Anne Tackett, Paul Gerard Sullivan, Dorothy Joan Dixon and her husband, Richard, Anne Marie Sullivan, Ellen Mary Stevens and her husband, Cheyenne. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Jonathan Edward Breckenridge and his wife, Elizabeth, Sally Breckenridge Pullen and her husband, Peter, Lucy Breckenridge Corkum and her husband, Dean, and Ann Bowling Breckenridge and her husband, Duke. Also surviving are her daughter-in-law, Cynthia Ann Meins, and her husband, Stuart, seventeen grandchildren, eight
step grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on May 7, 2016 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, MA. Following the service
interment will be in Quivet Cemetery, South Street, East Dennis, MA.
In lieu of flowers, Dorothy wished that donations be made in her memory to St. Jude Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
