Mar 25th, 2025
Marie Stella “Jackie” Alves (née Duval), passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, at the age of 92. Born on February 25, 1933, in Manchester, New Hampshire, Jackie lived a life defined by resilience, devotion to family, and an unwavering spirit of service.
Jackie’s early years were shaped by the values of hard work and perseverance. After graduating East Hartford, CT HS in 1951, she raised her children alongside her first husband, Norman Kendrick, while he served in the United States Air Force. Navigating the challenges of military family life with grace and strength, she created a home grounded in love and discipline. Her ability to instill character and adaptability in her children remains one of her proudest legacies.
Professionally, Jackie held a number of roles that reflected her drive and people-centered nature. In the 1960s, she worked as a salesperson for Ford Motor Corp. through the Air Force Base Exchange in Guam. By the early 1970s, she had returned stateside to serve as a receptionist for Spaulding Gardens in Enfield, Connecticut. Later that decade and into the 1980s, she thrived as a salesperson for Kirby Vacuum Cleaners and Merritt Insurance of West Hartford, Connecticut. There, she earned numerous awards for her outstanding service and success in providing health insurance products to small businesses across the state.
Jackie’s life was also marked by her generosity and hospitality. With her second husband, David Alves, she operated a vacation rental property at their home in South Yarmouth. Together they welcomed guests from across New England, creating lasting memories through their warmth and attentiveness. Their home became more than just a destination—it was a place where people felt cared for.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Jackie and David also served as Entertainment Directors at the Springfield Ski Club in Blandford, Massachusetts. They brought people together through food and music, organizing events that fostered community and joy. Jackie’s natural leadership and willingness to do whatever it took to ensure success made her an indispensable part of these gatherings.
Faith played an important role throughout Jackie’s life. A devout Catholic, she was active in various Catholic women’s groups over the years and regularly attended Mass. She was a devoted congregant of Saint Pius X Parish in South Yarmouth.
In later years, Jackie divided her time between Cape Cod and Cape Coral, Florida, where she spent winters with her longtime friend Malcolm Adamson. Together they embraced the warmth of Florida while continuing to touch lives with their kindness and companionship.
Jackie is lovingly remembered by her children: Mark Kendrick and his wife Susan of Hampden, MA; Gary Kendrick of Palmer, MA; Linda Colgan and her husband Matthew of New London, NH; Brenda Kendrick of Hyannis, MA; and by her grandchildren: Joshua Kendrick and his wife Leah of East Longmeadow, MA; Timothy Kendrick and his wife Nina of West Suffield, CT; Christopher Colgan and his wife Megan of Newport, NH; Jennifer Colgan of Fort Myers, FL; Ross Kendrick of Ware, MA. Jackie will be remembered for her lust for life, kindness, love, and friendship. Not to mention her bubble-blowing contest with Auntie Madeline. My life is richer because she was in it. Until we meet again.
