Kuhrtz, Steven Gosford of East Dennis, MA passed away on December 11, 2024 after a long Illness.  Steven was born in New York City on June 20, 1945 to Meffert and Marjorie(Gosford) Kuhrtz.  He was raised with his two brothers, Gregory and John  “Andy” Anderson   in Silver Spring, MD.

After graduating from Montgomery Blair High School, class of 1963, he entered Dartmouth College, class of 1967. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from Dartmouth and was a member of Theta Delta Chi Fraternity.

After college, Steven enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed his training with the U.S. Army Special Forces at Fort Bragg.  He proudly earned the title of “Green Beret”.

Upon completing his time in the service, he started a job with the newly formed Environmental Protection Agency in Washington D.C.  While at the EPA he worked on significant clean air projects.  He was proud to have been a key member of the team that drafted legislation to require catalytic converters on all vehicles, greatly reducing the level of air pollution in the United States.  Later in his career with the EPA he consulted with the State of New Jersey on various environmental projects involving Radon.

In 1986 Steven moved into the private sector and worked for the Cabot Corporation in Boston and Waltham, MA, followed by the GATX Corporation in Chicago, IL in 1991 where he worked as the Executive Vice President of environmental safety/government affairs.

In 2001, after returning to the Cape, he and his wife, Mary, purchased and operated a franchise of The Maids, a home cleaning business in Stoughton, MA which they ran successfully for 21 years before  selling it in 2023.

Steve developed a passion for singing and became a member of The Chatham Chorale. He performed with the group in concerts all over Cape Cod.  His favorites included the Holiday Pops concerts at the Barnstable High School and the Fourth of July concert at the Dennis Village Bandstand.  Recently he became a member of the Dennis Union Church Choir and We Are The Men.

From Labor Day 2002 until Labor Day 2023, Steven co-led the annual Quivet Neck Lu-Kow tournament on Sea Street Beach in East Dennis.  Carrying on a family and neighborhood tradition that has continued for nearly a half century, the game is a fixture to those enjoying the beach on Labor Day weekend.

Steven was predeceased by his parents, his brothers and his sister-in-law Susan Horowitz.Steven is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary K. (McCartney) Kuhrtz of East Dennis,  his son, Bradford Kuhrtz and his wife, Devon and grandchildren Catherine and William all of Duxbury, MA  Proud of his Swedish heritage, he was known to them as Far Far.

 He is also survived by his sister-in-law Patricia Kuhrtz of Colonial Beach, VA, brother-in-law Joel Horowitz of Evanston, IL and niece Katharine Horowitz and her husband Christopher Roethler of Minneapolis, MN and his Kinder cousins: Jeff, Tupper and Loring Kinder Strudwick and their families.

A memorial service will be held in the summer, his favorite season.  Bowties, Nantucket reds and other bright colors will be encouraged.  Burial will be private.

Steve's family would like to thank Dr. Glenn Bubley and his staff at Beth Israel Hospital for their care and kindness during Steve's illness.
