Donald Merino, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and lifelong educator, passed away on October 8, 2024. Born in 1937 in Weehawken, NJ, Don led a remarkable life filled with a passion for education, community and family.

A graduate of the Steven’s Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, class of 1960, he also obtained his Master’s and Ph.D. from Stevens. After a successful business career at Standard Brands, ExxonMobil and Celanese Corporations, Dr. Merino returned to Stevens and taught for over 30 years. He held the position of Alexander Humphreys Professor of Engineering Management and served as the head of the department. His dedication to his students and to the university was boundless, touching the lives of hundreds during his tenure. His love of teaching and devotion to the Stevens community were defining important aspects of his life.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Merino was extremely active in his community. He served as President of the Tenafly School Board and as Chair of the Tenafly Historic Commission, contributing significantly to local initiatives that shaped the town. After retiring to the family’s second home in Cape Cod, he remained engaged through his involvement with the Unitarian Church of Barnstable and Thatcher Hall in Yarmouth Port.

Dr. Merino is survived by his beloved wife of almost 64 years, Rosemarie; his sons, Donald and Stefan; and his grandchildren, Nicholas, Chase, Bresh, Veronica, and Stefinho, all of whom he adored.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 1, 2024, at 11:00am at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable, 3330 Main St., Barnstable, MA 02630.

Donald’s legacy will live on in the countless students he mentored, the communities he served and the family he loved.
