Ellen O’Grady Evans of West Dennis, MA passed peacefully at home on October 10, 2024 at the age of 82.
Ellen was born in Providence, RI and moved with her family to Danbury, CT when she was eight years old.
She graduated from Danbury High School in 1959 and then attended Western CT State University where she met her future husband, Jim.
After marriage she, Jim and their three children made their home in Peekskill, NY.
Ellen then completed her education at Ladycliff College and received a master’s degree in English from Western CT State University. She taught second and third grade in Peekskill for 24 years.
After retirement, Ellen and Jim moved to their second home in West Dennis, MA. Ellen’s love for teaching brought her to Ezra Baker Elementary School. She was also a member and very involved with the Friends of the West Dennis Library which brought her great joy and many lasting friendships.
Ellen loved growing up on Lake Candlewood as she was an avid swimmer. She could often be found in her beautiful gardens enjoying, redesigning her landscaping, or curled up with a good mystery book.
Ellen was predeceased by her husband in 2013. She is survived by her three children, Kathleen Evans McKey of Albany, OR, James Evans of Dunnellon, FL and Margaret Evans Trafford and her husband Carl of Hopewell Junction, NY. Her five grandchildren, Evan, Megan, Opal, DW, Nicole and two great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters Jane O’Grady of Bethlehem, CT and Louise O’Grady Hunt of Torrington, CT, her brother Dan O’Grady of Ballwin, MO and her sister-in-law Patricia Dowd of East Dennis, MA.
The family wishes to thank VNA Hospice for their support. Burial at Massachusetts National Cemetery will be private. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to the Friends of West Dennis Library or the VNA Hospice .
