George William Babcock passed away on September 24, 2024, after a prolonged fight with leukemia. George was born November 15, 1944, in Everett, MA to George and Rose (DiVenuti) Babcock.

George graduated from Everett High School in 1962 and UMass Amherst in 1967. He was a middle school mathematics department head in the Billerica school system for many years before his retirement. A body builder, George could also be found working weekends as a bouncer in several popular Boston bars, such as Brandy’s.

George married his college sweetheart Shirley (Ames) in 1972. George and Shirley were avid windsurfers and were often found at West Dennis Beach, rigging their boards based on George’s ever accurate wind report. In 1980, George and Shirley established the Dennis Wind Surfing Association, a group renowned for its scholarships, contests, and parties. During this time, George was known fondly as the Mayor of West Dennis Beach. Although they later divorced, Shirley and George remained friends until her death.

After retirement, George moved full-time to his beloved Cape Cod. In 2012 he met his future second wife, Liz Argo, and they married in 2014, spending the best 11.85 years of both their lives at his Cape Cod house with their Schnoodle puppy, Sophie.

George’s passions included being retired early, playing trivia, body building, wind surfing at West Dennis beach and dancing at O’Shea’s Olde Inn in Dennis. George was shrewd with money, earning him the nickname GBay.

George is survived by his wife, Liz Argo, her two children Lacy Argo Clark and John Michael Argo Clark, their dog Sophia Georgiana, his sister Carole Woodcock (William), nephew Matthew Woodcock (Rebecca) and niece Megan Panepento (Jeffrey). He also leaves behind grand nieces and nephews Lily Woodcock, Gavin Woodcock, Jennifer Panepento and Joseph Panepento.

There will be a private celebration of George’s life on November 15, the date of George’s 80th birthday.

Liz, we are heartbroken to hear about George. One of my fondest memories is being on the dance floor at O’Sheas and George was just the coolest dancer. You both always looked great together. We'll miss George dearly. I will think fondly of him as I enjoy all the restaurants he always suggested, especially O'Sheas, or when i see someone wind-surfing! He was a great man, kind and friendly. Always had a smile on his face.
