Anthony Joseph Pickowitz of 33 Lakeview Drive Sandwich, MA passed away at Cape Cod Hospital on July 1, 2024 surrounded by family. Tony was the son of Henry and Anne (Dislo) Pickowitz of Uncasville, CT.
 
He is survived by his brother David Pickowitz and his wife Kathryn of Sebastian, FL and his sister Kathy Sullivan and her husband Roger of West Dennis, MA. He was predeceased by his sister Marjorie and brother-in-law Garye Jensen. He is also survived by multiple nieces and nephews and was a grand uncle to seven.  He also has many cousins across the country.
 
Born on May 27, 1947, he spent his childhood in Montville and attended St. Bernard’s High School in New London, CT graduating in 1965.  He taught advanced chemistry at Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, CT for his entire teaching career and retired in 2004. He loved teaching and devoted himself to mentoring students over the years, many of whom stayed in touch.
 
Tony was an avid skier and was a long-standing member of the Mount Laurel Ski Club. He was an accomplished tennis player and coached tennis at Bloomfield High School for many years. Being left handed gave him a serving and return advantage that he used to great effect.  He loved boating and exploring the Connecticut coastline with his fishing buddies.  The family has fond memories of long weekends in Maine, snowmobiling, friendly gatherings, and sitting around the huge log fireplace.
 
He took life seriously and had strong beliefs about politics and hard work. An industrious “Jack of all Trades,” there was never a problem that he wouldn’t tackle or couldn’t solve.
 
Tony loved family and friends and made an effort to keep in contact to those closest to him.  Those who were on his “call list” delighted in the brief but meaningful ‘check-ins’ to see how everything was going.  “Just checking in” and “See-ya” were familiar phrases.
 
Most of all, he was sensitive and devoted to those in need.  He had a special place in his heart for the elderly who were delighted when he walked in the door.  He did countless acts of kindness, from mowing lawns, driving to errands, buying groceries or just sitting and visiting, that made the recipients feel as though they were the most special people in the world.
 
His retirement years were spent on Cape Cod, a lifelong dream.  He was proud of his home and will be remembered for his love of flowers and beautiful gardens.  Nothing made him happier than sitting on his back deck after a long day of yard work gazing out at the corner of the world that was his very own.
 
A funeral Mass will be held in Connecticut at St. John The Evangelist Church in Uncasville, CT on August 16, 2024 at 10:00 am with burial to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Uncasville.

July 30, 1996 - the day I met Tony at the first night of the Mountain Laurel Ski Club Tennis program. He was cutting into his birthday cake and his smile and laugh were infectious. He became a very good and dear friend. On one of my birthdays (decades ago) he gave me a plant - a spirea. Every time I care for it, I think of Tony and his kindness and generosity.... and I will continue to do so. My condolences to his family and dear friends. Kate

He mowed my parents' lawn and tinkered around with my dad, they had a lot in common and my dad really enjoyed Tony's company. To the Pickowitz family. I was sorry to hear of Tony’s passing. I too share many great memories of times at the Cape House, Vermont House and Maine House with him. He took pride in those houses and always made the yards look great. Some of my fondest memories were at the Cape House and the Saturday night BBQ’s. I recall the first time I went to the grocery store to help shop for a dinner for 24 or so. Chicken, rice pilaf or potatoes, salad and corn on the cob were often on the menu. Well, I came back with 24 ears of corn, 24 potatoes, etc. That certainly wasn’t going to feed 24! Tony took the time to let me know how to shop for the next group dinner. I never made that mistake again. Just one of many Tony Pickowitz memories. May he rest in peace. And may his memory fill your hearts.

When I was a young boy, my uncle Tony taught me how to play tennis, more importantly, how to serve. As we began the lesson, I smacked the first ball as hard as I could right into the net. In his sometimes gruff and firm voice, Tony told me that the key to serving (and perhaps life) was consistency. He said my first serve should be just like my second. Soon, my faults on serve were fewer and fewer. His big smile was proof of my progress. I will always remember that day on the court. Who knew that a tennis lesson for a 10-year-old boy (my youngest is ten now) on the importance of being consistent would stick with me for the rest of my life. Adam

I am so sorry to hear of Tony's passing. We met in 1979 at the Mountain Laurel Ski Club meeting. We had so many good times together. We skied, played tennis, enjoyed partying! I spent a lot of time at the Cape House and the ski lodge in VT. Tony was a true gentleman. He will be missed by many friends. My condolences to family and friends. May he rest in peace.

My husband, Gene, and I remember Tony with much appreciation for the care that he gave without wanting anything in return. Tony was a loyal and true friend. Whether taking my husband to the hospital when I had fallen or bringing groceries for us during COVID, or calling regularly to make sure we were okay, Tony gave of himself selflessly. Sorry to learn of Tony's passing. He was a great guy and he certainly helped to make the world a better place to be.

The obituary describes him perfectly! He did make everyone feel special. He was so caring and we shared the same philosophies which neither of us were afraid to express! I looked forward to his daily visits at Marian’s. We exchanged meals from home. If he brought plants for Easter or Christmas he would also bring one for me. He sent pictures of birds on messenger that he wanted me to show Marian but he would also send pictures of women doing axe throwing because he thought it was funny that I did it ! He gave me advice on any type of situation that came up with regard to cars or household repairs . He was a good friend that I will miss dearly. Because of Marian I was able to get to know him . It will never be the same without his daily visits. I am so sorry for your loss.
