Virginia (Devine) Leaver, a Vietnam War veteran and former resident of Cummaquid, Massachusetts passed away on May 17, 2024, at the age of 79. Ginny, as she was known to many, was born on August 3, 1944, in Portland, Maine. She graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School in 1962, then St. Elisabeth School of Nursing before enlisting in the U.S. Army. After Vietnam, Ginny settled on Cape Cod and worked as a Nurse for Neurosurgeons of Cape Cod.

A U.S. Army Nurse Captain and recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and Silver Service Star, Ginny served her country at the 24th Evacuation Hospital in Long Binh, South Vietnam during the war. Notwithstanding the accolades, she was most proud of her role in saving a Vietnamese newborn who was later adopted by a U.S. Army Sergeant stationed at the hospital.

Ginny’s life was marked by compassion, courage, and a deep sense of family. She was a proud patriot of her country and an active member of the Catholic Church. Working with the church and others in the community, she helped to establish Seton Academy, one of the first Catholic schools on Cape Cod. She was also a Eucharistic Minister, where she found joy bringing respite to others by delivering the sacrament to the sick and homebound.

A mother of four, Ginny embraced motherhood with love, patience, and unparalleled kindness, but her greatest devotion was to her thirteen grandchildren. Affectionally referred to as “Nana,” she completely and unapologetically spoiled them, never missing a recital, school event or birthday.

Ginny is predeceased by her parents, Charles and Mazie Devine. She is survived by her four children, Maureen (Tim) Larsen of Gretna, Nebraska, Brian (Patricia) Leaver of West Barnstable, Jeff (Kara) Leaver of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Sean (Kathy) Leaver of Norwell; her three brothers, Charles (Mary) Devine, Fr. William Devine, and Patrick (Jennifer) Devine; and her thirteen grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave, South Yarmouth. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at 11:00am at Sacred Heart Chapel, 32 Summer St, Yarmouth Port. Interment will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. The family requests that funeral and burial attendees wear red, white, and blue in honor of Ginny’s zealous patriotism.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 21 Cross St. Hyannis, MA 02601.
