Emilie E. Barrett
May 4th, 2024
Emilie E. (Moxon) Barrett, 93, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, in the soft morning light of Saturday May 4th, 2024. Emilie was the loving wife of Rowland H. Barrett for 55 years before his passing in 2012. She now joins him in peace and rest.
Daughter of the late David Moxon and Laura Lyman Moxon, Emilie was raised in Framingham, MA, and graduated from Framingham High School in 1948. Encouraged by her father to continue her education, she attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, earning her Bachelor’s degree in 1952.
Emilie first met her husband, Rollie after pulling into the gas station where Rollie worked; an encounter that ignited a lifelong connection. On June 1, 1957, Emilie and Rollie exchanged vows at the Plymouth Congregational Church in Framingham Ctr, MA, marking the beginning of a journey defined by love and unwavering commitment. After 34 years in Connecticut, they built their dream home and moved to Cape Cod in 1986, where Emilie remained a cherished resident until her final years.
Emilie dedicated her professional life to serving others. She began her career as a Social Worker for the Connecticut Humane Society, tirelessly advocating for the welfare of children and elders. Her passion for social justice led her to roles with the East Hartford Probation Department and the Manchester Connecticut Welfare Department. For a decade, she contributed her expertise to the Department of Biology and Health Science at the University of Hartford.Upon relocating to Cape Cod, Emilie continued her service with Carson Limited in Yarmouth Port until her well-deserved retirement in 1999.
Her commitment to service extended beyond her professional endeavors. Emilie was an active member in her community, shown by her involvement in numerous organizations, including the Brewster Baptist Church, Framingham Chapter of DAR, Massachusetts Audubon, Bayberry Quilters, the Wallace Nutting Collectors Club, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, the Garden Club, and the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society. In 1948, Emilie’s Father, David Moxon, co-founded the Framingham Heart Study, and Emilie and her family actively participated in this important research, and continue to do so.
She found great pride in forming connections with her community through her hands-on engagement and creative expression, deriving immense joy from quilting, basketmaking, and gardening, and even more joy from the people she met along the way. Emilie was recognized often for these amazing talents and shared her beautiful quilts and baskets with so many people that are now fortunate to enjoy Emilie’s stunning work. Her love for gardening extended past her own gardens and to her church. Emilie and her husband Rowland helped create the Meditation Garden at the Brewster Baptist church. A gorgeous work of art and space to reflect and experience mindfulness, connect with nature, and rediscover some inner peace.
Emilie’s “Circle of Friends” quilting group, her Mahjong group, and the “Lunch bunch” were just three groups that were so incredibly special to Emilie. Emilie lit up when she was with people, instantly engaged, interested, and happily connecting with those she’s cared about. She loved trying new things and equally loved sharing her knowledge and talents with others, regularly volunteering for committees to extend a helping hand.
Emilie's legacy is woven into the lives of her surviving loved ones. She is fondly remembered by her two children, Cynthia Barrett and Jon Barrett and his wife Betsey; three step children, Dr. Rowland P. Barrett and his wife, Nancy, Dr. Nels E. Barrett and his wife, Julianna, and Leslie A. Moore and her husband, Gerald; her sister, Joan I. Scharlacken and her husband Richard; two grandchildren, Lydia O’Bannon and Alyssa Barrett; two great grandchildren, Mia and Millie O’Bannon; three nephews, Raymond, Paul, and John Scharlacken; one niece, Juliann Scharlacken and several cousins who will hold her in their hearts forever.
Emilie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rowland H. Barrett, who passed away in 2012 to cancer. They loved enjoying Cape Cod together kayaking, visiting the beaches, gardening, enjoying the orchestra and performances at the Cape Playhouse, and showing their support for the Boston Red Sox from the “geezer room”. They even travelled to Red Sox Spring Training in Sanibel Island, FL to see them play; an experience they deeply cherished. Together in life, they shared countless memories and left an enduring legacy of love and devotion.
Emilie approached life with a sense of duty, spirituality, and devotion to her family and friends. She embodied living, laughing, learning and loving. She had a kind smile, a warm hug, and if you were lucky enough to have made her laugh, you were able to witness her gentle laughter and her famous “Oh, dear!”. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will forever shine brightly in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, May 16th, 2024 at the Brewster Baptist Church, 1848 Main Street (Route 6a), Brewster. Interment will be private. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7pm on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024 at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made in Emilie’s name to the Brewster Baptist Church, 1848 Main Street, Brewster, MA 02631, www.brewsterbaptistchurch.org; OR, to the “Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore” by visiting www.fccns.org.

We never met directly, but I feel like I knew you, because Cindy would always send me photos of your adventures together. And anyone who raises such a sweet, loving human being, obviously is the same. And I met Cindy the day after my mother passed 13 years ago. She is a true blessing. My prayers are with all of you too are and will be missing her. May all the fun memories help ease the pain of your sorrow as well as knowing she’s now resting with her soulmate. God bless.
