Mary Elizabeth Christensen
Mar 1st, 2024
Mary Elizabeth “Marybeth” McCann Pomeroy Christensen passed away at home surrounded by her family on March 1, 2024, after a short period of failing health. Born in Brockton and raised in Easton, she was the daughter of the late Archibald and Mary (Welby) McCann. She was a graduate of Oliver Ames High School and then furthered her studies by receiving her Bachelor’s Degree from Framingham State University and her Master’s Degree from New York University. She had a long and fulfilling career as a Home Economics teacher in Chappaqua, New York before retiring to her happy place…Cape Cod.
Marybeth married the late Robert Francis Pomeroy in 1949. Together they welcomed their son Robert Stephen Pomeroy and began their life as a family in New York. They would summer in West Yarmouth, MA where they enjoyed all of the Cape’s treasures; swimming, boating, and making life-long memories with family, and friends that became family. Bob died in 1967, and Marybeth and their son Bob continued their lives in New York and on the Cape.
In 1973, Marybeth married the late Vernon C. Christensen, a widower with two sons: Kurt Christensen and the late Karl Christensen. They retired to their home on the Cape in 2000, and had many happy years of traveling and entertaining friends. They traveled and lived all over the world, and Marybeth would continue to add to her long list of loving friends. She could remember where and when she purchased artifacts and treasures that she would generously gift to her family and friends.
Above all, Marybeth lived her life to the fullest. Her family and friends were the center of her world, and she was their rock. Always available, honest with her opinions, and genuinely loving to all of her family and friends, Marybeth will leave a huge void in our lives. She was “the cookie lady” to generations of young children on the Cape who would visit her “porch” and talk for a bit. Her green thumb enabled her to decorate with beautiful centerpieces and cultivate gorgeous landscapes in her yard, and she shared these willingly. We were blessed to have had her in our lives.
Marybeth leaves her son Robert and his wife Eleanor; her stepson Kurt Christensen, his wife Jane, and their children Kaitlyn and Ian and their families; her sister Joan McCann Nolan; and several loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Patricia McCann DeCoste.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 6 from 5-7 pm at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Avenue, S Yarmouth, MA. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 7, at 10 am at St. Pius X Church, Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, MA. A private burial for the family will be held at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centerville, MA. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Marybeth’s memory to The We Care Fund, Medical College of Wisconsin, Department of Surgery, Milwaukee, WI (www.mcw.edu/wecare) or the Yarmouth Food Pantry, 845 Route 28, South Yarmouth, MA 02664 (yarmouthfoodpantry.org/donate).

I feel devastated by the absence of Beth’s remarkable presence and friendship. She was a colleague of my husband in Chappaqua, NY and we were friends and soulmates for many years. We enjoyed sharing dinners on Restaurant Row in NYC. When he invited foreign guests to the Bell School, Beth prepared delicious luncheons for these dignitaries. May she rest in well-deserved peace. Deepest Condolences to her family from the Edelmans in Chaplin, CT.
As President of the Cape Cod Framingham College Club, I want to offer my sincerest condolences to Marybeth's family. She will be dearly missed at our meetings. She was a very active member and I enjoyed knowing her.
I am glad to have known our cookie lady who my sisters and I lived next door too. Marybeth was so wonderful and the three of us cherished her. She was so kind and made us feel special over all the years that we knew her. Every year we would go visit her while she was at the Cape house and reminisce about all our younger years in the neighborhood. She was a remarkable women and kindhearted. I will miss her.
I am truly saddened by the news of “Auntie Bethy’s” passing. Bob, your mom was truly one of a kind! Your day was made better if you were fortunate enough to see her. She will be missed by all that had the good fortune to know her! May she rest in peace…
I was a happy recipient of Marybeth’s famous cookies on the porch! And my children were also! She was the sweetest and kindest person…and will be missed and forever remembered! I’m sure my mother, Joanne, greeted her with a loaf of Italian bread when she went through the pearly gates! Our family spent many summers on ‘Webster Ave’ with our cousins, the Moran’s. God bless Marybeth and Vern
The Parks family is blessed and privileged to be connected through enduring friendship with the Pomeroy family. Marybeth was the consummate beloved matriarch, with a network of friends and family stretching across oceans who were fortunate to experience her generosity, humor, intellect, tenacity, and resilience. The Parks family celebrates Marybeth's full and wonderful life. We are grateful that we hold many cherished memories of being with her in Cape Cod and Mystic. Our love and condolences go out to the Pomeroy family, particularly to her son Robert and daughter-in-law Eleanor. With much love, John, Maggie, John Jr., and Alexander Parks, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Bobby, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Your Mom was truly an icon in the neighborhood. I will certainly miss our talks on the porch as well as all the cookies and brownies she so often sent our way. The world has surely lost a bright light. I know you will have so many memories to sustain you. May she rest in peace. Love, Nancy Diomandes

Marybeth was a cherished friend and neighbor on Cape Cod. I loved chatting with her about teaching school. One of the greatest people, she was blessed and had a wonderful life on the Cape. Loved going to visit her every year I came back to visit. I will miss her. Thanks for informing me Bobby. I love you.
