Joseph Francis Meehan, Jr
Feb 1st, 2024
Joseph Francis Meehan Jr. 90, of West Yarmouth, passed into eternal life on February 1st 2024 surrounded by his loving family.
Known as “Ted”, he was born in Andover and grew up in Mattapan. Ted graduated from Boston College before entering the Army in 1955. He met the love of his life Joan Cook and they married on October 6, 1956. They had 63 wonderful years of marriage and five children before her passing in 2019.
After serving his country, his beloved Uncle George took him under his wing and he started his career in the sporting goods business, where he enjoyed great success. Along the way Ted invented a lure that set the Striped Bass/Bluefish fishing industry on fire. He named it the Hoochy Troll and they were in such high demand and short supply that tackle shops were actually renting out the lures when they first hit the market. Sixty years later, it’s still the go-to lure.
Ted was born on Friday the 13th and would say that it brought him nothing but good luck his whole life. He built his dream house, had his sportfisherman, named “Hoochy” of course, and he and Joan traveled the world. A huge Boston/BC sports fan and always active, Ted played his last tennis match just weeks before he became ill. A good life lived to the fullest, God Bless Ted and Joan.
Ted is survived by his five children, Joseph Francis Meehan III of Mashpee, James Francis Meehan of South Yarmouth, Nancy Eccleston of Sandwich, Sean Francis Meehan of Los Angeles, Holly Brown of Auburn and 9 grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be celebrated March 8th at St Pius X Church, Station Ave South Yarmouth at 11am. A burial will follow for both Ted and Joan at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA at 1:15 pm.
