John Michael Rice, 80, of Estero, FL, formerly of South Yarmouth, MA, and Manchester, CT, passed peacefully at home on Saturday, December 9, 2023. Born and raised in Manchester, CT, John graduated from Manchester High School and joined the U.S. Navy in the early 1960’s where he served in Naples, Italy. John worked for many years in the Travelers Insurance Data Center in Hartford, CT where he made many life-long friends. Upon retiring to Cape Cod, John drove the community “B” bus where he became well known to the people in the area. John enjoyed travel, cruising, trains and spending time with family. He celebrated his 80th birthday this year on an Alaska cruise with many family members. He was well known for his sense of humor and he was joking right up until his last day. Most of all, he was known for being a true family man and was always there in support or to mark special occasions.

John leaves his companion Martha Cave with whom he spent his last several years enjoying beach life. John also leaves his siblings Mary Ann (Jorge) Okhuysen of Houston, TX, Barbara (Richard) McKenney of Chatham, MA., and Regina (Anthony) Dowgiewicz of Timonium, Md., step-daughters Selina DeSpirt of Jewitt City, CT and Lisa Moore of Montana as well as several grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews all who were very close to “Uncle John”.

He was predeceased by his wife Marie Elaine Rice (2016) and his beloved daughter Elena Marie Rice (2013).

In lieu of visitation, a life celebration including most of John’s closest friends and family members was held with John at the Wayside Inn of Chatham in late October and was truly enjoyed by all that attended. Private services will be managed by Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave, South Yarmouth, MA. Interment will be in Chandler Gray Cemetery, 161 Old Mill Way, South Yarmouth, MA.
