YARMOUTH PORT – Steven L. Roberts, 81, of Yarmouth Port, MA passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at Harbor Point in Centerville, MA.  He was the beloved husband of Susan (O’Neil) Roberts, with whom he recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in June with dinner at one of their favorite restaurants.

In addition to his wife, Steve is survived by and will be deeply missed by his daughters, Rebecca Roberts of Lowell, MA and Jennifer Roberts of Hooksett, NH as well as his brother and sister-in-law, David and Edith Roberts of Stowe, OH.  He was predeceased by his first wife Carol (Brainerd) Roberts and his daughter, Jessica Roberts.  He is also survived by grandchildren Shelby and Parker Morrow of Lowell, MA, Amanda Lank of Johnson City, TN, Brittany Colley (Aaron) of Bluff City, TN, and Seth Leonard (Jamila) of Johnson City, TN, along with six great-grandchildren.  Stepchildren Lara Seavey of Cohasset, MA and Kent Conforti of Newton, MA will also miss his gentle presence.

Steve was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and grew up in Phoenix, AZ.  He was the son of the late Harold and Mary (Study) Roberts.  He was a graduate of Camelback High School in Phoenix.  While in high school, he enjoyed performing magic shows and was a member of Bert Easley’s Fun Club.

From Camelback he went on to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a full scholarship from the Fannie Hertz Trust, graduating in 1965 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.  He then went to work for Motorola Corporation in Arizona.  Subsequently, he moved back to New England, living in Amherst, NH for thirty years with his first wife, Carol, and their family of three daughters.  He worked at various manufacturing companies in New England, including Sanders Associates and Digital Equipment Company, ending his career with a company developing a portable heart defibrillator.

Steve loved learning new technologies, which extended to personal computers and computer programming.  Other interests included sci-fi and fantasy in novels and movies. He also loved animation and comedy shows.

Steve married Susan in 1998 and on retirement they moved to Yarmouth Port on Cape Cod.  They quickly made new friends and acquaintances through the Newcomers Club.  They tried new activities such as kayaking, walking groups and dog ownership.  Mack, the Westie, was a great walking companion and Steve walked and loved him for 13 years.  Other good friends were found at South Yarmouth Tennis Club and in their neighborhood near Gray’s Beach and the Boardwalk.  For 10 years, Steve and his wife were snowbirds who lived in Cape Coral, FL during the winters.  More good friends and good times were made there.

My dear younger bro Steve was a gentle soul, and very smart. He followed me to MIT with a bigger scholarship and better grades. One of our most memorable childhood experiences was camping with Dad in northern Arizona, where Steve got sprayed by a skunk that he was trying to distract while I tried to lasso it. Steve’s brown belt turned black from the skunk spray, and we had to bury all of his clothes, but we all survived the experience and had a good laugh. I'm going to miss our back & forth visits between OH & MA, as well as fun phone & email chats, including Steve's technical counsel on computer-related issues.
