Anthony Simon (Tony) Mercaitis

Anthony Simon (Tony) Mercaitis, passed away peacefully at Epoch of Brewster on May 27, 2015 at the age of 94. He grew up in Hyde Park, MA and attended St. Raphael’s grammar school. He graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1937. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Airforce and served from May, 1942 to February, 1946. He married Charlotte Cecilia Connelly on February 1, 1947. She predeceased him in January, 2000. He attended Northeastern University for two years. Mercaitis started his career as a rope walk in Charlestown, MA, and finished his career in electronics on Cape Cod.
Tony is survived by his four children: Paul J. Mercaitis of Slingerlands, NY; Patricia A. Mercaitis, of Amherst, MA; Paula L. McGrath of Perry Hall, MD; and Frances G. Bellanceau of Mystic, CT. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Orion Mercaitis of Miami, FL; Sarah E. M. Fajardo of Long Island City, NY; Jessica. L. M. Fajardo of San Francisco, CA; Kimberley McGrath of MD; James McGrath of MD; Gregory McGrath of MD; Jeffrey McGrath of MD; and Jason Bellanceau of Putnam, CT. He is survived by his great-granddaughter, Zoe Bellanceau of Putnam, CT. He will also be missed by his long-time companion, Jane Blakely of Harwich, MA.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #7312 in Harwich/Brewster, MA, having also served as a Grand Knight of the Council. His hobbies were gardening, golfing, and baking pies. He was particularly well known for donating his pies to local church fairs. He will be dearly missed.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, MA on Monday, June 1, 2015 from 5-8 P.M. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. in Our Lady of the Cape Church, Stony Brook Rd., Brewster, MA. Interment in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA at 1:15 P.M.
