Richard Leo Dainis, 89, of West Dennis, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Cambridge, MA, he was the son of the late George and Ida (Kechon) Dainis.
Graduating from Matignon High School, Richard went on to work his entire career at Polaroid working on film coating machines and later in research and development. He was the cherished husband of Barbara Murray Dainis and devoted father to Richard Dainis Jr., Jeffrey Dainis, Michael Dainis and his wife Susan, and Susan Thomas and her husband Wayne. Beloved brother to Charlotte Shaw and her late husband Bob and the late George Dainis and his wife Jeanne. He was a loving grandfather to Jake, Brooke, Brandon, and Ben Dainis, as well as Grace and Owen Thomas.
Richard loved working on his lawn, fishing off the rocks at Lighthouse Inn, and surf casting at West Dennis Beach where he was constantly in pursuit of catching a 40lb striped bass. His family will fondly remember his boisterous laugh, how he always had a friendly smile and hello for his neighbors, and carried dog treats in his pockets for the dogs walking by his house. Richard's love of fishing, his love for his family, and his warm spirit will forever be etched in his family's hearts.

I did a search for Dick and found his tel number. We talked for about an hour and we reminised about working in W4. Dick was one of the people that hired me in early 1966 in W4. He taught me so much about coating. To get into the X100 coater you had to go through a dark corridor. Polaroid was in the throes of trying to coat their own negative. It had been done by Eastman Kodak. We would have visitors to our coater. Occasionly Bill McCune would come to see a run. Otto Wolfe was there about twice a week. Dick loved going to the Cape. But, there was a staff meeting on Friday that he had to attend. Barbara would get the family in the car and be waiting in front of W4 at about 3PM. The closer to 3 that it got the antsier he got. He came up with the idea to page him for a phone call in his office. So, every Friday at about 2:55 I would page him and that was his exit from the meeting. After about 6 months he told me that he thought that they were catching on so we had to change it to an 'emergency call at the guards desk' He was a great supervisor and a better friend. I am so glad that we talked just before his passing. I still cannot believe it God bless you my friend.
