Aug 22nd, 2023

Alma Elizabeth (Towey) Moravick passed away on Tuesday, August 22 at Mill Hill Residence, West Yarmouth, MA at the age of 98.  Better known as Grammy Alma, she was the wife of Joseph George Moravick who passed away on September 11, 2017.  They were married for 70 years.  Alma is survived by five children, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her daughter Jane Moravick Costello who passed away in 2004.

Alma was born in Katonah, NY on January 24, 1925, the daughter of Elizabeth and James Towey.  She was one of nine including five brothers and three sisters, all of whom are deceased.  She graduated from Somers High School in 1942 and attended Berkeley Secretarial School.  After graduation, she worked for the New York Central Railroad during World War II.  She married in 1947 and she and Joe ultimately raised six children.

Alma’s surviving children include:  Joseph J, 75 and his wife Cathy,  Mary Lieto, 72 and her husband, John, Ann, 66, David, 64 and his wife Martha, and Joan, 61 and her husband Ken.

Alma was a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother who selflessly cared for others and demonstrated her love through delicious home cooked meals and baked goods.  Her kitchen was always open.   Her love of children and the desire to work, spurred her to a second career in the Somers School System when she was in her forties.  She was the admin to the assistant principal and kept the trains running and kids in line.

In 1986 she retired with Joe and they moved to South Dennis where they enjoyed their remaining years together hosting family dinners, walking the beach and the Indian Trail, gardening and taking care of birds.

Family and friends may call at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, MA on Tuesday, August 29 from 9:00-10:00 a.m.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 South Main Street, Centerville, MA followed by interment at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Route 134, South Dennis, MA

Because Alma was a devout Catholic, believing in the power of a good meal to bring people together, contributions may be made in her name to one of three charities:  Feeding America, Catholic Charities or The Family Pantry of Cape Cod.

We have many fond memories of Alma, Jane and your entire family. Those were times when the district was small and close. Today, we thank her once again for her service and kindness to the faculty and students. She was always there for our family and we wish we could be there to honor her memory with you.

I’m so sorry to hear of Alma‘s passing. I started working for Somers High School in 1984. At that time Alma worked for the assistant principal, Mr. Bertolacci. I might’ve spelt his name wrong. She was a lovely woman, sweet and kind and loved the kids. When she retired, I filled in for her. May she rest in peace!
