Dorrit Constable Gutterson
Jul 27th, 2023
Dorrit Constable Gutterson passed away peacefully on July 27 in Hyannis, MA at the age of 69. She was born in Greenwich, CT and grew up in Wallingford, CT where her father was an English teacher, dormitory master and track coach at The Choate School. She attended St. Margaret’s School in Waterbury, CT and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. After graduating, she worked in Boston for a number of firms as a secretary before the onset of chronic rheumatoid arthritis in her hands made office work too difficult. She moved to Nantucket where she had spent summers growing up in Siasconset and held several jobs there before moving to Santa Rosa, CA where she worked at a home and garden supply store. She spent her last years in Mashpee, MA with her beloved cats Fenway, Baxter and Bayberry.
Dorrit was a sweet woman beloved by her family and friends. She had a lively personality and a quirky sense of humor. She loved to trade puns with her father on their daily walks down Baxter Road to get the mail in the village. She was a good tennis player who won several doubles titles at the Siasconset Casino. She never lost her love for Nantucket and always considered it her real home. Her condominium in Mashpee was filled with Nantucket memories and artwork including paintings by George Davis and the quarter board “Eastward” from her family’s former house on Baxter Road. A prized possession was her surf casting rod custom built for her by Bill Fisher.
Dorrit is survived by her brother, Eric Gutterson, her sister-in-law Elizabeth Boles Gutterson, her nieces Elizabeth Gutterson Lynch and Caroline Constable Ward and her nephew Russell Gutterson. She will be interred in the columbarium wall of the Sconset Chapel. A service will be held at a later date.
