Mildred Ann Serena (Hoar) of West Chester, PA and South Yarmouth, MA formerly of Palm Harbor, FL passed away peacefully at Bryn Mawr Hospital, Bryn Mawr, PA on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at the age of 94.
Born April 21, 1928, in South Boston to the late James P. and Anna Hoar, she was pre-deceased by her 5 siblings: Helen M. Hoar, Sr. M. Borgia, CSJ, James P. Hoar, Marguerite Wilson, and Rita P. Scott. Millie was happily married for 58 years to her husband George P. Serena who passed away in 2009. She was a devoted and loving mother to Praji Sakata, Patricia Serena and Martin Joyce Jr., Mariellen Serena, Peter and Lee Serena, Karen and Joseph Neal, Nancy Serena and Robert Adams, and Elizabeth Serena Sanford. Adoring grandmother to Matthew and Elizabeth Joyce, Michael and Sarah Joyce, Anthony Serena, Alesha and Dietrich Hosfelt, William, Alexander, and Peter Sanford. She was also great grandmother to Madeline, Henry and Eamonn Joyce, George and Joseph Joyce, and Caleb Hosfelt.
She will also be remembered by her dear sisters-in-law, Lelia Truant and Maria Timmerman, and her many nieces and nephews.
Millie was a proud 1949 graduate of Emmanuel College and was a devoted Kindergarten teacher in the Boston Public Schools for many years. Later, Millie and George retired to Palm Harbor, Florida where they enjoyed many new activities and spent time with friends as residents of the Highland Lakes golf community. Love of family and love of God were Millie’s guiding principles throughout her life. She enjoyed a long, happy, active life and her favorite activities included square dancing, knitting, golfing, spending time with her family and friends on Cape Cod and watching the Boston Red Sox. Millie will be remembered and missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
Memorial visitation at the Hallet Funeral Home 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, on Friday May 5th 10:30-11:30am followed by a funeral mass at St. Pius X Catholic Church, South Yarmouth at 12:00pm. Relatives & friends invited. Interment at Bourne National Cemetery at 1:45pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Millie’s name to the Catholic charity of your choice.
