Marion Homer Painter

Marion Symmes (Homer) Painter, age 94, of Yarmouth Port, MA passed away at home on Sunday, February 19, 2023. Marion was born on January 12, 1929, in New York City to Marion (Symmes) Homer and Sidney Homer, Jr. A graduate of Smith College and Columbia School of Journalism, Marion was a writer, covering the missionary work of the Methodist Church in the 1950’s. She married William H. Painter in 1955. She is survived by their two sons, Richard William Painter, a law professor in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Edward Homer Painter, founder and chairman of A2A Pharmaceuticals in New York City. Marion’s husband William Hall Painter was a law professor for many years and passed away in Yarmouth Port in 2018 at age 91.
Marion’s mother was one of many in the Symmes family to live in Winchester and elsewhere in Massachusetts since 1634 when Rev. Zechariah Symmes immigrated from England to Charlestown where he employed, among others, the Rev. John Harvard as his assistant. Marion’s father, Sidney Homer Jr., was an economist who headed up the bond market research department of Salomon Brothers in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Her grandfather, Sidney Homer Sr., was a composer of songs and her grandmother, Louise Homer, was a well-known contralto for the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
A funeral service for Marion will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Route 6A, Barnstable, MA on Saturday, February 25 at 11:00 AM followed by interment at Woodside Cemetery, Summer St., Yarmouth Port, MA.
