Joyce L. Oppen, 95, of West Dennis Massachusetts, passed away at the Mayflower Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. Joyce was born in Flushing, NY to the late Edward and Lillian Millman. Joyce and her late twin sister, June, graduated from Plainfield High School, Plainfield, New Jersey.
Joyce was married for 51 years to Harold R. Oppen, who passed away in 1997. She dedicated her early years to raising her family and tending to their home. As her family responsibilities eased Joyce began her employment as one of the front office secretaries at Okte Elementary School in the Shenendehowa School District, Clifton Park, NY, where she enjoyed working for many years. She retired in 1987 and moved to West Dennis on Cape Cod with Harold. In later years she volunteered and eventually was employed at the West Dennis Free Public Library.
Joyce was very easy to know and consequently made friends wherever she worked or lived. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Harwich, MA.
She is survived by her daughters Kathleen S. Sunkes (Paul) of Yarmouth Port, MA, Deborah L. Farstad (Richard) of Greenville SC, and Nancy A. Rapsard (Stephen) of Latham NY. Joyce enjoyed and was very proud of her six grandchildren, Kristen Sunkes (Robert Mahnke), Jocelyn McNeice (JJ), Erik Farstad (Kristian), Hayley Widmer (Carl), Lauren Sheldon (Kevin) and Ashley Rapsard (Tom Swart) and great grandchildren Henry, William, and Annabel Mahnke, Ava and Lilly McNeice, Saige and Evie Farstad, Jase, Bennett and Camden Widmer, and Eloise and Molly Joyce Sheldon.
A funeral service will be held Monday February 13, 2023 at St Peter’s Lutheran Church, 310 Route 137, Harwich, MA at 2:00 PM. Burial at Massachusetts National Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials in her name may be made to the West Dennis Free Public Library, 260 Main Street, West Dennis, MA 02670 or St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 310 Route 137, Harwich, MA 02645.
