Joseph L. Barker
Dec 28th, 2022
Joseph Barker, 98, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2022. Son of Harry and Mary (Fallon) Barker. Joseph graduated from high school and enlisted in the Army during World War II. He served our country for “2 years, 11 months and 7 days.” (Dad liked to be precise). Following his service, Joe studied Electrical Engineering graduating from Northeastern University. His career began at Boston Edison Company where he met the love of his life, Doris Sullivan. Together they raised their family in Norwood while Joe managed system operations for Boston Edison. In 1969, they purchased land on Cape Cod and built a cottage and a lifetime of memories for us all. Upon retirement, Joe got his contractor’s license and built his retirement home on Cape Cod. He could “turn his hand to anything” and tackled projects of all shapes and sizes at his children’s homes, the local tennis club and Florida condo association. He enjoyed, golf, tennis, sailing, home repair projects, and happy hours with family and friends. He leaves us with endless memories of fun laughter.
Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife Doris and his brothers Harry and Robert. To cherish his memory, he leaves his children and their spouses: Steve and his wife Clotide, Bruce, Dianne McAvoy and her husband Brian, and Joyce Leckey and her husband John. He deeply loved his 12 grandchildren who adored him back: Christian, Julia and Alex; Brian, Sean and Kimberly; Jennifer, Jordan, Paul, Heather, Michelle and Thomas. He also leaves many cherished nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his enormous heart, infinite patience, grace under fire, a quick, stealthy wit and a funny collection of coined words.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 10:00am at St. Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth, MA. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Rt. 134, South Dennis.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s honor can be made to the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, P.O. Box 36, Hyannis, MA 02601.
