Albert Smith Jr., 85, of Osterville, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle, passed away on Friday, August 5, only 10 days after being diagnosed with a form of dementia known as Lewy Body Syndrome.

Al was born on February 10, 1937 in Yarmouth Port, MA. As a young child he was given the nickname “Putt” by his brother, and this term of endearment stayed with him for life. A member of the Yarmouth High School class of 1955, he was lovingly voted "Class Clown". He excelled at every sport he played, and proudly wore his 1955 varsity football jacket at his 80th birthday party.

Faith was an important part of Putt’s life. Growing up in Yarmouth Port he was active in the Congregational Church. As an adult, he joined the United Methodist Church, where he and his wife June married in 1961.

Putt was a talented house painter. He began his career at Lloyd’s Norfolk Paint in Hyannis. Over the course of 25 years in the field, Putt worked on the most elite homes in Osterville and eventually had his own painting business.

Putt proudly served his country as a member of the Army National Guard for 8 1/2 years and was honorably discharged in 1963.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, June B. (Crocker) Smith, his daughter, Alison (Smith) Sargent of Osterville, and his grandchildren Jordan Alexandra and Connor Philip Sargent of Osterville. He is predeceased by his infant son who died in 1971. Putt also leaves siblings Patricia D. Minotti and her husband Robert of Centerville, Lorraine M. Burkhead of West Yarmouth, Raymond Smith and his partner Barbara Araujo of South Dennis, and brother-in-law Carlton B. Crocker and his wife Pamela of Centerville. Putt was a loving uncle to several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brothers Lawrence Smith and Milton A. Smith, his sister-in-law Carol B. Martin, his niece Karen Buster, and his nephew Wayne Smith.

A true gentleman with a broad smile, mischievous sense of humor, and love for everything and everyone, Putt made life better for all who knew him. You met him once and were a lifelong friend. His greatest love was his wife June, whom he met in 1957. They were together for 65 years. He told her every day that he loved her. He was happiest on the water, swimming in the ocean, boating, fishing, or teaching his grandchildren how to dig for clams, and he always appreciated the beauty of the simple things in life. He was the best Mr. Fix-it around and always had multiple projects on his workbench underway for his daughter.

Putt was affectionately known as “Bubba” by his adoring grandchildren. He was proud of his family for their achievements and was an avid supporter at all of their events and life milestones.

Putt’s family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to family, friends and neighbors for their love and support during his final days, especially the compassionate staff at McCarthy Hospice Center.

Calling hours will be Saturday August 13 from 2-4pm at the Hallett Funeral Home 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. (masks will be available for those who wish to wear them). A service celebrating Putt’s life will be held at the Osterville Methodist Church, 57 Pond Street, on Saturday August 27 at 11am.
