Marilyn McCarthy
Jun 21st, 2022
Marilyn C. (Evelyn) McCarthy, 98, of Yarmouth Port, passed away on the summer solstice: June 21, 2022.
Marilyn was born in Brighton, the daughter of the late Lyndon and Mary (Berkeley) Evelyn. Marilyn was predeceased by her husband James, her sons David of Dedham and James of Mansfield, and her brothers Lyndon Evelyn and George Evelyn.
Marilyn is survived by four sons: Paul and his wife Mary of Chatham, Kevin and his wife Diane of South Yarmouth, Mark of Yarmouth Port, Barry and his wife Sally of Winchester, and her daughters-in-law Linda of Walpole, and Diane of Mansfield. She was the loving grandmother of Jarrod McCarthy, Rachel and her husband Anthony Lancione, Peter McCarthy, Andrea and her husband Scott Heckmann, Meredith and her husband Scott Bouchard, Aja and her husband Dan Walsh, Kerrie and her husband Andrew Odabashian, Jennifer and her husband Ryan Kelley, Kelly and her husband James Iacono, Nathan McCarthy, and Lily McCarthy, and the beloved great-grandmother of Jackson and Jaymee Bouchard, Jarrod and Ava McCarthy, Gianna Lancione, Grant, Christopher and Wyatt Heckmann, and Austin and Maxwell Kelley.
Marilyn was educated at Brighton High School, Boston Clerical School and Harvard Extension School. She resided in Dedham, MA while raising six sons with her husband. Once her sons were in school, she began working part-time at Touraine’s in Dedham where her interest in fashion led to doing the commentary in area fashion shows. She was active in St. Mary’s Church and began an interest in politics and was a poll worker at elections. In 1970 she became a principal clerk at Norfolk Superior Court until her retirement in 1984. Marilyn maintained a lifelong interest in art and studied with many instructors throughout her life; she was a member of the Dedham, Norton, Canton, and Hyde Park Art Associations.
Upon relocating to Cape Cod in the year 2000, Marilyn became a juried member of the Cape Cod Art Association, and a member of the Yarmouth Art Guild and Cultural Center of Cape Cod, where her oil paintings were often exhibited. She was a volunteer for many years at the Museum of Art in Dennis, and was a 10-year member of the Board of the Friends of the Museum, and was also a member of the Yarmouth Democratic Committee.
Marilyn’s keen interest in genealogy began at an early age when she spent summers with her maternal grandmother on the shores of Bass River, living in stately old family homes, listening to stories of family sea captains – including ones of her grandfather. She was 11th generation of two of the earliest families in Bass River and South Yarmouth: Baker and Matthews from 1635, and a descendant of members of the Evelyn family, who were among “adventurers” to James, Virginia in the early 1600’s. Many of her paintings reflect her love of the antique houses and sea and shore.
Her other great interest was in travel, and along with life-long friends, traveled to Bermuda, Greece, Paris, Mexico, Italy (twice!), Spain, Ireland and Guatemala. A plein air painting trip to Provence and St. Marten ended with a final winter vacation in Florida, which she enjoyed for many years.
Golfing and tai chi were her main sports and exercise, along with a swim in the ocean, not only in Cape Cod Bay, but in most of the places and countries she visited.
Burial will be private.

My deepest condolences my dear Paul on the passing of your mom. May her memory be a blessing. I had the honor of meeting Marilyn a few years back and she reminded me of a very vivacious older woman. She will be missed.
