Margaret M. May
May 10th, 2022
Margaret "Peggy" Mary (Guilfoil) May, 88, of Dennis, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, surrounded by her granddaughters.
Peggy shared love by caring for the smallest of details. She had a knack for making the person she spoke to feel like the most important person in the room with her loving aura. A gardener at heart and member of the Yarmouth Garden Club, she saw beauty in the changing seasons with vibrant colors rotating like an ever-changing canvas in her flower beds. Peggy was a lover of fiction novels, the Dennis libraries, card games, and a proud breast cancer survivor represented in her pink hydrangeas adorning her garden. Her Catholic faith was a pillar of her loving strength. She shared this love by embracing each person's story with a loving smile, a safe haven to confine trust, and a motherly hug. She believed that if you "love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, just love." In her later years, her granddaughters were the light of her life, as she was to them.
Born in Astoria, NY, Peggy was a proud first-generation Irish-American. She graduated from William Cullen Bryant High School, Class of 1952. She is the daughter of the late John Donald Guilfoil Sr, Anne Bertha (McMorrow) Guilfoil, & beloved stepmother Marge (Gass) Guilfoil. She was predeceased by her three siblings: Anne Josephine, Jacqueline Mary, & Dr. John "Jack" Donald Guilfoil, and his partner Hans Sowisch. She was a devoted wife to the late Gerald S. May, Sr, where they raised their family in Ramsey, NJ, later retiring to Cape Cod.
Peggy was a true angel from Astoria. She leaves behind her two beloved sons: Gerald Stanley May Jr. and his wife Laura McDowell-May of Dennis, and Harold Talcott May of Taos, NM. Known as Mama Peg to her three granddaughters, she leaves behind Miriam, Annalee, & Jackie of Dennis.
