James Brindle Lathrop, 75, of Yarmouth Port, passed away on May 3, 2022 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Jim was an international traveler throughout his life, beginning with his birth in Quirigua, Guatemala where his parents were living under the auspices of the United Fruit Company. After growing up in Glastonbury, Connecticut and immediately following his graduation from Boston University Jim joined the First National Bank of Boston. In 1972 he and Kate, his wife of two years, were sent to Tokyo, Japan for a stay that lasted six years. In 1978 he, Kate, and young son Ben, who was born in Tokyo, moved to Singapore. While there Jim left the Bank of Boston and joined State Street Bank staying on in Singapore for five years. Next came a move back to Boston to an eventual position in Global Custody and a suburban life in Hingham. A brief move to Hong Kong in 1985 rounded out his overseas postings. During those years he travelled to over 85 countries.

After his retirement Jim and Kate moved to their home in Yarmouth Port. Though a relative newcomer to the Cape (10 years), Jim had very deep roots there indeed. He was a direct descendent of the Reverend John Lothropp who, along with his congregation, arrived in 1639 to settle and eventually incorporate the town of Barnstable. Jim was a very active retiree. He was meaningfully involved in the Academy for Lifelong Learning at Cape Cod Community College where he was a student and served as president. Jim also served as treasurer for the Lothrop Family Foundation, and he held the informal record for the greatest number of rides provided to members as a volunteer for Bay to Sound Neighbors.

Jim was a loving husband and father, a devoted grandfather, and a steadfast friend. While often seen attending enthusiastically to his many community activities, it was time spent with family and friends that brought the most joy to him and those around him. The co-host of frequent gatherings, Jim relished the thoughtful and usually witty discussions that were hallmarks of nearly every interaction with him. The gifts of warmth, compassion, intelligence, and a wonderful sense of humor that came so effortlessly to him made Jim the nucleus of many an event and a cherished councilor to those around him.

Jim is survived by his wife, Kate; his son, Ben and his wife Leslie; his two wonderful grandsons, Sam and Owen; and his three sisters and their spouses.

Kate, I'm so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He was a joy to know and a true gentleman.
