Philip Thomas Egan III
Aug 8th, 2021
Philip Thomas Egan, III, 75, of Hyannis, formerly of Yarmouth Port, passed away on August 8, 2021. He was the son of the late Philip T. Egan, Jr. and Alice K. Egan, both of Cape Cod.
Phil was born on November 21, 1945 in Quincy, MA after his mother went into labor during a family vacation off Cape. Phil was raised in Yarmouth and continued to live there until only recently. He attended the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District where his father taught biology, and Phil was a proud graduate of the D-Y Class of 1964. He joined the US Marine Corps while still in high school and went on to travel the world on the USS Independence which was stationed in Norfolk, VA. Phil was proud of his country and his duty as a Marine; so much so that he was honorably discharged twice after completing two tours in Vietnam. Phil achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and received numerous medals and commendations including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Navy Unit Citation, the Good Conduct Medal, the Rifle Marksman Badge, and the Pistol Marksman Badge. Phil eventually returned to Cape Cod and attended college before moving to New Hampshire for a few years to run a small farm with his family. His return to Yarmouth brought him back to his favorite place for the remainder of his life.
Phil had an outstanding work ethic and worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He was multi-talented and demonstrated much success in managing different Cape Cod restaurants, running several of his own businesses, and assisting the elderly in his final position of employment. He was known as a leader and friend to all. For years, he welcomed college students to the Cape to work at his restaurants, often serving as their father figure and caretaker while they lived apart from their parents. Phil cared deeply for his employees and for the elderly whom he assisted. He always sat and listened to everyone in his life, and gave advice and support in a variety of ways. His family would say that he was always willing to give the shirt off his back to someone in need, even if he didn’t have a shirt to give.
Phil had a genuine love of the ocean and all things Cape Cod, including lobstering, fishing, clamming, and boating. He loved being out on the water, and he cherished his trips up and down Bass River and beyond. Phil also loved to entertain, either on the boat or at the family compound in Yarmouth Port. He invited family and friends to clambakes and pool parties, and he loved having his children and their families all together. Phil also loved raising chickens, caring for his dogs, taking vacations in Fort Myers, Florida and playing the lottery. Simply put, he loved life and was just a lot of fun.
Later in life, Phil reconnected with the Marine Corps by joining the Marine Corps League, Cape Cod Detachment #125. He enjoyed the comradery of his fellow Marines and raised money for the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund for high school students. He marched proudly in parades, attended monthly meetings (in full uniform) and served his community through charitable acts. Phil was recently awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by the Cape Cod Detachment #125.
Phil had a tremendous sense of family, and he was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He valued his family, and he will be truly missed by all. Phil is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart of 55 years, Judith (Provost) Egan; and his three children, Joanna Egan Hughes and her husband, Dan, of Sandwich, Marissa Egan Ficken and her husband, Justin, of Yarmouth Port, and Dr. Edward Egan, DMD, and his wife, Holly, of East Sandwich. He is also survived by; his eight grandchildren, Christopher, Jack, Katie, Thomas, Joseph, Anna, Ryan, and Casey; as well as his siblings, Rosemary White of South Dennis, Mary Warde of Michigan, and Denise Metell of South Yarmouth.
Phil’s family and friends are welcome to attend his celebration of life on Saturday, August 14, 2021 from 1:00-4:00pm at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave, South Yarmouth, MA. A brief memorial service will commence at 3:15pm for those who would like to attend. Burial will be private and held at a later date.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Phil. I got to know Phil through my husband Paul, who had know Phil for a number of years. Fortunately for me, I got to know him a bit better when he had joined Neighbor Crime Watch and we had many meeting together regarding that. He was a very sincere man, and I had always respected him for that. My thoughts are with you, and I hope you have many memories that will help you with your loss, Sincerely, Carol McBride
My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Philip. When my husband and I first met him we knew he was not only a dedicated Marine but a kind and openly generous person. My heart is with all of you over your loss. He was a fine man
